Afrobeats heavyweight Davido has opened up on the unexpected story behind his collaboration with Omah Lay—and it all started with a major misunderstanding.
According to Davido, the link-up was sparked after Omah Lay publicly admitted he once believed the DMW boss wasn’t a fan of his music. The perception quickly changed when Davido played Omah Lay’s track during a viral livestream in Lagos alongside American streamer Kai Cenat.
Davido revealed that Omah Lay’s reaction online caught his attention, prompting him to reach out directly. Confused by the assumption, he questioned why Omah Lay thought there was any bad blood between them, especially since they had never crossed paths before.
What followed was a creative connection that quickly gained momentum. The two artists began exchanging ideas and recordings, eventually working on multiple tracks before settling on “With You” as their official release.
The song went on to become a standout moment on Davido’s fifth studio project, 5ive, further cementing the chemistry between the two stars. It has also earned major recognition, landing a nomination in the Best African Music Performance category at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
The collaboration not only cleared the air but turned a simple misunderstanding into one of Afrobeats’ most talked-about musical moments.
