Michael B. Jordan has won the Best Actor Oscar for his dual performance in the supernatural drama Sinners, where he plays twin brothers facing a sinister, vampire-driven threat amid racial segregation in the American South.
At 39, Jordan earned the honor on his first nomination, riding strong momentum after a Screen Actors Guild victory. He prevailed over fellow nominees Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent, and Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon.
His portrayal of Smoke and Stack—World War I veterans who return to Mississippi during Prohibition to open a juke joint—drives the film’s mix of social commentary and supernatural horror. The project also marks another collaboration with director Ryan Coogler, continuing a creative partnership that began with Fruitvale Station.
With this win, Jordan joins a select group of Black actors who have claimed the Best Actor Oscar, alongside trailblazers like Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith.
Accepting the award, Jordan reflected on that legacy: “I stand here because of the people that came before me: Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith. To be among those giants—those greats—means everything. Thank you to everyone here and everyone at home who has supported me throughout my career. I feel it.”
